P.H. LOBEL (DATES UNKNOWN)

[SALON DES CENT]. 1899.

24¾x19¼ inches, 63x49 cm.
Condition A-: minor creases and abrasions at edges; small paper remnants on verso, at corners; hand-signed by the artist in blue pencil in lower left corner. Paper.

Lobel's entire artistic legacy consists of only a few lithographs and two prestigious posters: one for the print dealer Pierrefort, and this one, for the 31st Salon des Cent. It is a shame that he didn't create more work, as his style reflects an intimate familiarity with Toulouse-Lautrec and the precepts of the Nabis. Here, the layout, drawing quality and masterful use of lithography (using the white of the paper to create the net) all show the marks of a first rate artist. This is the version before text.
